You have the right to request deletion of your personal data from ZimLayby. Here's how to do it, what gets deleted, and what we have to keep by law.
How to request deletion
1. Send us an email
Email privacy@zimlayby.com with the subject line "Data deletion request". Include:
- Your full name
- The phone number or email on your ZimLayby account
- (Optional) a quick reason — it helps us improve, but you don't have to share it
2. We verify it's really you
We'll send a confirmation message to the WhatsApp number or email on your account to confirm the request actually came from you. This protects you from someone else asking us to delete your account.
3. We delete within 30 days
Once verified, we delete your personal information from our active systems within 30 days. You'll get a final confirmation email when it's done.
What gets deleted
- Your name, contact details, ID number, and address
- Your account at zimlayby.com/me
- Your next-of-kin details
- Any application drafts you started but didn't complete
- Marketing preferences and cookie settings
- Login history and IP address logs (after the standard 90-day security retention)
What we have to keep
By Zimbabwean law (Income Tax Act, anti-money-laundering rules, accounting standards), businesses must retain financial records for 7 years. This means we cannot delete:
- Records of completed laybys (the agreement, payments made, items delivered)
- Receipts and tax invoices
- Records of any cancellation or refund
These records are kept in a restricted archive — separated from any active customer-facing systems — and only accessed if required for tax filing, audit, or legal compliance. After 7 years from your last layby, they are permanently destroyed.
If you have an active layby
You can request deletion of your personal data, but we can't delete it while you have an active layby with one of our shops — we need it to fulfil the agreement (reserve your items, send reminders, issue receipts). Once your active layby is complete or cancelled, your deletion request will proceed automatically.
Removing your data from a specific shop only
If you only want to stop one specific shop from contacting you (but keep your account at others), email us and we'll restrict that shop's access to your details. Your account at zimlayby.com/me stays active and your laybys at other shops are unaffected.
